Arctigenin is the aglycone of arctiin and is a lignan found in certain plants of the Asteraceae. It has shown antiviral and anticancer effects in glass. It showed potent in vitro antiviral activities against influenza A virus.
Arctigenin is the aglycone of arctiin. It has shown antiviral and anticancer effects. Here it was found to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and the mechanism by which this occurred, as well as the effects on glucose and lipid metabolism were investigated. A new role for arctigenin as a potent indirect activator of AMPK via inhibition of respiratory complex I, with beneficial effects on metabolic disorders in ob/ob mice. This highlights the potential value of arctigenin as a possible treatment of type 2 diabetes. arctigenin might be used as a potential lead compound for the discovery of the agents with mimic exercise training effects to treat metabolic diseases. Arctigenin selectively promoted glucose-starved A549 tumor cells to undergo necrosis by inhibiting mitochondrial respiration. arctigenin elevated cellular level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and blocked cellular energy metabolism in the glucose-starved tumor cells. combined arctigenin with the glucose analogue 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) and examined their effects on tumor cell growth. The combination of arctigenin and 2DG may represent a promising new cancer therapy with minimal normal tissue toxicity. Arctigenin inhibited T lymphocyte proliferation and decreased the gene expression of IL-2, IFN-? and NF-AT.
