Testosterone boosting effects in rats have been noted at a dosage of 200 mg/kg of a 40% extract (80 mg/kg Icariin), and based on body weight conversions from rats to humans this results in an estimated human dose of:
- • 900 mg Icariin for a 150 lb person
- • 1,200 mg Icariin for a 200 lb person
- • 1,500 mg Icariin for a 250 lb person
Studies that use a lower dosage of Icariin (1-10 mg/kg) are approximately equal to:
- • 11-110 mg Icariin for a 150 lb person
- • 15-150 mg Icariin for a 200 lb person
- • 18-180 mg Icariin for a 250 lb person
The human study on postmenopausal women and bone health noted that 60 mg Icariin daily was active, and might serve as the lowest active dose currently known. It also appears to fall within the above range of lower active dosages which show benefits in rats. *
For the treatment of atherosclerosis and ED, the University of Michigan recommend taking 5 grams 3 times per day. For the treatment of hay fever, it is recommended to simmer 500 miligrams in 250 milliliters of water for 10-15 minutes and consume 3 times daily.
People should check with their doctor to see if seeping in water is required when treating themselves with horny goat weed. Typically, the herb is mixed in a tonic to decrease the risk of side effects. *
